All phases of restoration take place in house by our people. This allows us to have direct control over the restoration process and we can turn out boats that not only look good, but run and operate correctly as well. It is a core philosophy of ours that the boat must be able to float and run as well as it looks. For this reason we pride ourselves on our ability to restore antique machinery as well as woodwork.
We employ
approximately 15 full time carpenters, refinishers, and mechanics. Most of these
people have had long experience with our company and have largely been trained
in house to produce work to our high standards.
We use modern methods and materials wherever possible and constantly test new products and finishes. We specialize in fiberglass over wood bottoms. Unlike some inferior glassed bottoms, ours employ state of the art biaxial cloths as used by modern boat builders. This results in a substantial lay up which in effect becomes a second bottom overlaying the original bottom planking. Some of our bottoms are over 30 years old and are still going strong.
We still use traditional; spar varnishes in our finishing, but we commonly use epoxy sealers on the bare wood to improve adhesion and longevity of the finish. We also use epoxy glue extensively in the reconstruction of wood framing and planking. Our skillful carpenters can duplicate any piece to perfection and our refinishers can produce finishes which are nearly flawless.
Our machine shop can handle all aspects of the mechanical restoration. We can fabricate missing pieces and have an extensive inventory of parts. If we can't make it, we know who can. We have rebuilt engines as old as 1918 Liberty V12's to the most modern fuel injected V8's. Mechanicals are often re-engineered from original specifications to improve durability and safety.
Our most extensive restoration project ever was the complete rebuilding of 2 identical Chris Craft 1929 38' Commuters. Not only did we have to perform extensive wood working and varnishing; we also had to restore all mechanicals to original specification including the Chris Craft A-120 V8. Complex geared steering systems had to be remade, and intricate plumbing and wiring needed to be fabricated for the engine, galley, and head. The interior and exterior fabrics had to be researched and matched and many hardware items needed to be recast or fabricated.
